If you find holes in your tomatoes, and frass and decay you may have tomato fruitworms. You may still find a caterpillar in them as well.

Bacillus thuringiensis var. aizawai is a bacterium that has been around since 1901.  It is specific to caterpillars and the alkalinity in their gut. Once the consume this endo toxin the caterpillars quit eating and slowly die.

Spinosad is made of spinosyns A and D, they are substances that are made by aerobic fermentation.   The species that is being fermented is Saccharopolysora spinosa of the actinomycete species. They were found in the Caribbean in soil samples in 1982. They are the filamentous bacteria that are in the soil that give it that sweet earthy smell.  Spinosad works by ingestion, activating the nervous system of the insect, causing loss of muscle control.  The insect dies of exhaustion because of the continuous activation of motor neurons.  This usually happens within one to two days

Garlic Extract uses garlic to repel insects. Some are mixed with hot pepper to even further drive the pests away.

NPV for Helicoverpa zea Heliothus virescens – This is an insect virus that kills larval pests that feed on feed on  crops that are stored and on certain other plants as well.  The plants or food that is in storage is sprayed with the active ingredient.  The virus interferes with several of the larval organs including food absorption in the gut.  Larvae will die in a few days.  There is no risk to humans, beneficials or the environment.
